Poopin’

July 30th, 2009 No comments

I am in the small waiting room of my son’s speech therapist’s office. Other parents are also sitting in the cheap chairs, waiting for their sons and daughters to finish their sessions with the counselors. The bathroom door opens directly into the small space and my nine year old son bounds out, proudly announcing, “Hey dad, I pooped!”

The other parents look at me with a smirk.

I am not (almost, but not quite) completely embarrassed, as I know Spencer has had issues with bowel movements. His pediatrician asked him to tell his parents about each one in order for us to track his pooping schedule and report back at the next visit.

With the other parents looking at me with their smirky faces, and the giggles from the other children waiting their turn with the counselors, I ask, because he does need to be reminded, “Did you wipe? And, wash your hands?”

Oblivious to everyone’s snickering, he responds, “Sure did. And it was a good big one…” and he proceeds to describe all the details of his excrement. What can a parent do, but tell his son, “Good job,” and glance at the audience with shrugged shoulders?

He returned to his counselor’s office and the rest of the session continued on without incident, or any additional public report of bodily functions.
